The Dance of Opposites

    When all under Heaven see beauty as beauty;

    There is the knowledge of ugliness.

    When all see good as good.

    There is the knowledge of evil.

    Thus Being and Non-Being engender each other;

    Ease and difficulty complement one another;

    Long and short exhibit each other;

    High and low lend measure to one another;

    Voice and sound blend together;

    Before and after succeed each other.

    Therefore the Sage acts without acting,

    Teaches without words.

    The Ten Thousand Things unceasingly wax and wane;

    Nourishing them, he claims no ownership,

    Doing his work, he craves no reward.

    Completing his task, he calls for no commendation.

    His work is finished and forgotten.

    Its fruition is forever intact.
