The Voice of the Silence: Table of Updates

From the 1889 First Edition to the Online Edition.

Note: this is an ongoing project. Last updated: September 15, 2020.

Rationale: The purpose of these corrections and updates is to facilitate serious study. Updated terms allow students, academics or researchers to quickly and easily search for those terms online, with the correct and most common modern spellings. Consistent spelling of techincal terms allows for easy and complete word-searches throughout the text. Updated styling, i.e. in the formatting of book titles, etc. allows for easy referencing.

The updates and corrections are made throughout the whole text, including when the author is quoting from another work wherein a term may have been spelled differently. Thus it should be clear that this online edition is meant solely as a study and research aid, and not as a verbatim record of the original publication or of quoted works.

Gnyana

Jñāna

Changed to proper IAST Sanskrit (ज्ञान). Spellings such as “gnyana,” “gnâna,” “dnyan,” etc. are based on the corruptions of the original Sanskrit word in languages such as Hindi, Marathi, Nepalese, etc., and their pronunciations, which often drop the final “a” and corrupt the “jña” to “gny” (see Hindi IPA pronunciation /ɡjɑːn/, or Marathi pronunciation “dnyan”), whereas the proper Sanskrit pronunciation is as it is written “jñana” (IPA /ˈd͡ʑɲɑː.n̪ɐ/). The Indian language corruptions of the Sanskrit and the resulting phonetic romanizations caused confusion among theosophists between the terms jñāna and dhyāna, as is seen in the term jñāna-marga, which some have mistakenly rendered dhyāna-marga.

Dhyanis

Dhyānis

Changed to anglicized plural of the proper IAST Sanskrit (ध्यानिन्). The correct spelling, in the singular, is “dhyānin,” but in English writings such Sanskrit terms are often given in their singular nominative case, and pluralized from there (i.e. yogī instead of yogin); in this case, the singular nominative masculine is “dhyānī” and neuter is “dhyāni”; the anglicized plural is thus given as “dhyānīs” or “dhyānis.”

Ku

Changed to Chinese Hanyu Pinyin transliteration and added Chinese character in square brackets. The spelling of these four Chinese terms was likely drawn by HPB from Ekins, Chinese Buddhism, 1880, p. 23fn, where Edkins gives the terms as “Ku, Tsi, Mei, Tau.” It is quite possible that HPB wrote these out as such, but that they were misread by the printers and by later theosophists who were not familiar with the proper Chinese spellings.

Kiau-men

Jiào-mén [教門]

Changed to Chinese Hanyu Pinyin transliteration and added Chinese characters in square brackets (教門). HPB drew her spelling of these two terms from Edkins, Chinese Buddhism, p. 155 et seq., but the second term seems to perhaps be an error. Jiào-mén means literally “religious-teaching-gate” or the gate of religious teaching, but the term traditionally used is Jiào-xià [教下], the “lower religious teaching” as contrasted with the “higher” school. Thus instead of -mén this likely ought to be -xià. However, we have chosen to keep the term used by Edkins and HPB.

Raṭṭhapāla Sūtrasanne

A sanne (or sannaya, සන්නය) is a Sinhalese paraphrased translation/commentary or a “interverbal paraphrase/interpretation” of a sutra. Upâdya

Changed to proper Sinhalese transliteration based on ALA-LC (උපාද්ය). The spelling HPB uses comes from the Sinhalese and represents a shortened version of උපාධ්‍යාය (upādhyāya) or උපාධ්‍යායයා (upādhyāyayā); the same shortned version is found in Pali (upajjha shortened from upajjhāya) and other Indian languages, e.g. Marathi where the shortened version is upādhyā. We have maintained the Sinhalese spelling here and added the Sanskrit for clarification.

Gnyana

Dad-Dugpa

Dad-Dukpa [དད་? གདུག་པ, dad? gdug pa]

Changed to THL Simplified Phonetic Transcription of Tibetan; added Tibetan script and Wylie transliteration in square brackets. The term “dugpa” is often connected with that which is known as the Drukpa lineage (འབྲུག་པ་, 'brug pa), but HPB clarifies her wider use of the term in a footnote to her article “Reincarnations in Tibet,” where she provides two similar sounding terms: first, the term the dugpas themselves used—dokpa (འདོགས, 'dogs pa), meaning “to bind”—and second, the term the Tibetan people in general used in a deprecatory manner—dukpa (གདུག་པ, gdug pa) meaning “mischief-makers, sorcerers.” HPB uses the latter, deprecatory term, to refer to the “brothers of the shadow,” or socerers, as opposed to pointing strictly or generally to the Drukpa lineage, as she further clarified in a posthumously published article, explaining that while the term dugpa can be used as a general term, her use of it for “socerers” more specifically refers to an elite “nucleus of priests” found mostly in Bhutan and Sikkim (see “Elementals,” Lucifer, Vol. 13, p. 34-35). For these reasons we feel that in updating the term in HPB’s writings, it is best to use “dukpa” (mischief-makers) rather than to imply that HPB is referring solely or generally to the drukpa lineage in her use of the term. The first part of the term as used here (“dad-”) is of unknown origin. HPB borrows this from Emil Schlagintweit’s Buddhism in Tibet, 1863, p. 74. The Tibetan word “dad pa” means “faith,” (also “devotion, faith” in Dzongkha or Bhutanese) and it is possible that this is the term that is meant, perhaps as a sub-sect of the Drukpas, but we have not been able to find evidence of this usage. Other possibilities may be the Tibetan “'dod-” (desire), “'dad-” (having attachment or desire for the dead), “bdud-” (demon), etc. It may also have been a typographical mistake in Schlagintweit’s book. We thus leave the spelling as is until the correct word can be verified.

Dhyâna

Jñāna

Corrected the term; correct term is given in proper IAST Sanskrit (ज्ञान). This was a printer’s error based on a misreading of the Marathi spelling of the previous term.

Dhyani-Buddhas

Dhyāni-Buddhas

Changed to anglicized plural of the proper IAST Sanskrit (ध्यानिबुद्ध). The term “dhyāni-buddha” was first used by Brian Hodgson, then adopted by Emil Schlagintweit, T. W. Rhys Davids and others and even into Monier-William’s Sanskrit-English Dictionary, from which it has come into common use even today, but no such compound term has been found in any Sanskrit text. The term is, however, a proper Sanskrit compound by the rules of Sanskrit grammar (dhyānin + buddha = dhyānibuddha), hence we have simply corrected the diacritic use and left the term as is.

Added ’ instead of the proper IAST Sanskrit (Brahmā or Brahma). It is almost certainly Brahmā which is meant in this context.

Parabrahm

Parabrahma

Changed to proper IAST Sanskrit (परब्रह्म). “Parabrahma” is a compound of two terms: para+brahman, declined in the neuter singular. In northern India it is common to eliminate the final “a” at the end of such terms, for instance “yog” instead of “yoga”; hence “prabrahm” instead of “parabrahma.” In Sanskrit texts, the common forms given are as a declined compound, “parabrahma,” or as two declined terms “param brahma.” The term in its undeclined form “parabrahman” falls under the same general approach as “karman” or “dharman,” both of which are commonly given in their neuter singular declined forms (“karma” and “dharma”); we have chosen to do the same here, and have thus changed all instances to “parabrahma.”

Aryahata

Arahatta

Changed from Sanskrit to proper Pali term (in IAST transliteration). In the 1889 edition, the term here given was “Aryahata,” with the footnote indicating that this derives from the Sanskrit Arhat or Arhan. However, the Sanskrit term ārya comes from a different root (ṛ) than the terms arhat or arhan (from the root arh). The term for this path in Sanskrit would therefore be something like “arhata” instead of “āryahata.” However, there is no Sanskrit noun “arhata” (nor “āryahata”) in the Sanskrit dictionaries or in common use. Because of this, it seems best to use the common equivalent in Pali (arahatta), as it is both in common use and holds the exact meaning intended by connecting it to the Sanskrit terms “arhat” or “arhan” (or their Pali equivalent “arahant”).
