Isis Unveiled: Table of Updates

From the 1877 First Edition to the Online Edition.

Note: this is an ongoing project. Last updated: April 5, 2019.

Rationale: The purpose of these corrections and updates is to facilitate serious study. Updated terms allow students, academics or researchers to quickly and easily search for those terms online, with the correct and most common modern spellings. Consistent spelling of techincal terms allows for easy and complete word-searches throughout the text. Updated styling, i.e. in the formatting of book titles, etc. allows for easy referencing.

The updates and corrections are made throughout the whole text, including when the author is quoting from another work wherein a term may have been spelled differently. Thus it should be clear that this online edition is meant solely as a study and research aid, and not as a verbatim record of the original publication or of quoted works.

ילד

ילד [or ילדה, yaldāh]

Added the feminine form and its proper Hebrew transliteration, based on ISO 259, in square brackets (יַלְדָּה). H.P.B. gives the masculine form ילד (yeleḏ), whereas the feminine form is the proper Hebrew for the romanized “ilda” (or ialda, or yalda). While both terms in the compound are feminine, Ilda-baoth is typically referred to as a “son”, therefore we have left the masculine term as is. See also, The Secret Doctrine, 1:197 fn210.

בדוצ

ביוץ [biyūṣ]

Corrected Hebrew spelling, and added proper Hebrew transliteration, based on ISO 259, in square brackets. (בִּיוּץ). See also, The Secret Doctrine, 1:197 fn210.

Note: the correct Hebrew term for “egg” is ביצה [bēṣāh], whereas ביוץ means “ovulation”. The latter is most likely the term H.P.B. sent to the printers in her MS., whereas in printing the error of reversing the letter י with the letter ו was made. In The Secret Doctrine, 1:197 fn210, the same sentence is given and there an error is also made in the Hebrew term.
